“Penguins” are encouraged to compete at local, branch or state surf carnivals where they can test out their developing skills. They do not need to be champion competitors to become an important part of the surf club. The carnivals are a fun way to meet other junior club members and experience the ‘team spirit’.
After successfully completing the Surf Life Saving Certificate during their 13th year, they will be able to assist as junior members of the Wollongong City Beach patrols. The “Penguins” participate in a pointscore on Sunday mornings from 9am to approximately 11.30am. Points are awarded for achievement during pointscore weeks for activities such as swim, wade, sprint, flags, board etc. These are tallied during the season. Occasionally, a twilight pointscore is held on a Saturday afternoon commencing at 3 pm, in place of the Sunday morning. 2009 - 2010 CalendarClick on the link below for the 2009 - 2010 Juniors Calendar 2009 - 2010 Information & NewsletterThe first newsletter for the 2009 - 2010 season will be available at pointscore on 11 October. The Wollongong City Beach Surf Club, both senior and junior, is fully run and administered by volunteers. The “Penguins” junior committee, age managers and water safety people are parents. The support of parents is needed to enable Sundays to be enjoyable for everyone. Parents are encouraged to assist by being an age manager, a water safety officer, non-swimming beach events helper or just a general helper. The junior surf-lifesaving movement can be a very rewarding experience for the whole family. Parents and children learn important beach and water skills, and enjoy the friendships that come with belonging to a club. Parents can also gain valuable knowledge by becoming an Age Member, joining the committee or gaining qualifications such as the Surf Lifesaving Certificate, Level One Coaching and Officials Certificates, Bronze Medallion or a variety of other awards.
